A PHOTOGRAPHIC RECORD OF THE LAST YEAR OF THE HISTORIC KING’S THEATRE, EDINBURGH, IN HER CURRENT INCARNATION, AHEAD OF A MAJOR RENOVATION PROJECT – AND A PORTRAITURE SERIES OF THOSE WHO WORK BEHIND THE SCENES.
Otherwise known as ‘The Old Lady of Leven Street’, this elegant Edwardian building has been a working theatre since 1906, hosting many of the greatest stars of British and international acting, music and dance.
This photography series approaches the building as the central, flamboyant character of the story, but with a huge supporting cast of backstage technical and maintenance staff. It shows the graft behind the spectacle; the ropes, the wires and the peeling paint in the dressing rooms as well as the gilt and marble of the grand foyer and auditorium.
The backstage staff aim for invisibility in their work, making the magic happen behind the scenes, but the portrait aspect of the project honours their contribution. I did twenty seven portrait sessions with the individual people of the King’s, each in a part of the building selected by themselves; somewhere holding meaning for them.
